Visiting Versailles from Paris: the complete guide 2026

Versailles, the French art of living

Just thirty kilometers from Paris, the Palace of Versailles is one of the most visited monuments in the world. A symbol of royal splendor and a masterpiece of classical architecture, it deserves to be discovered under the best conditions.

Here is our guide for an ideal day, based on ten years of experience accompanying our clients on site.

How to get to Versailles from Paris

Three main options are available:

  • By RER C train: direct from Paris (Saint-Michel, Invalides, Pont de l'Alma stations). About 45 minutes. Practical but often crowded.
  • By private transport: a chauffeur picks you up at your hotel and drops you at the palace entrance. About 35 minutes outside rush hours.
  • By personal car: possible but parking is saturated on weekends and public holidays.

For a stress-free day, a private chauffeur remains the most pleasant option, especially when traveling with family or distinguished guests.

Opening hours and tickets

The palace is open every day except Monday, from 9 AM to 5:30 PM (6:30 PM in high season). The gardens are accessible earlier, from 8 AM.

Our advice: book your skip-the-line tickets online at least 48 hours in advance, especially between April and October. The standard queue can exceed two hours on a Saturday in spring.

The perfect day program

  • 9:00 AM — Departure from Paris, arrival at Versailles around 9:30.
  • 9:30 – 12:30 — Palace tour (Grand Apartments, Hall of Mirrors, Queen's apartments).
  • 12:30 – 2:00 PM — Lunch. Several options on site or in the town of Versailles. Reservation recommended.
  • 2:00 – 5:00 PM — Discovery of the gardens, the Petit Trianon and the Queen's Hamlet. An electric cart ride is available for the larger estates.
  • 5:00 PM — Return to Paris.

The gardens: the best-kept secret

While the palace impresses, the gardens deserve equal attention. Designed by André Le Nôtre, they extend over nearly 800 hectares and host the Musical Fountain Shows from April to October — a magical spectacle of water basins and fountains set to baroque music.

Allow at least two hours to appreciate their richness, more if you wish to explore Marie-Antoinette's domain.

What people often forget

  • Plan comfortable shoes: distances are long.
  • Bring a bottle of water, especially in summer.
  • Avoid Tuesdays (day after the closing day, very busy).
  • The private guided tour of the secret apartments is well worth it.

In summary

Versailles is one of those destinations that deserve time. A well-organized day, with a chauffeur handling the logistics, makes all the difference between a rushed visit and a memorable experience.
